Coil Weight Calculator
Calculate coil weight for steel, aluminum, stainless and copper. Enter width, thickness and length (or OD/ID) for precise estimates.
Inputs
Enter the dimensions of your metal coil.
Note: All dimension inputs should be in inches.

Formula Used:
Weight = (π * (OD² - ID²)/4) * Width * Density
Formula (Imperial)
Weight (lb) = Density (lb/in³) × Length (in) × Width (in) × Thickness (in)
If using OD/ID, compute length from coil geometry; otherwise use known length.
Worked Example
- Length: 4,000 ft × 12 = 48,000 in
- Volume = 48,000 × 36 × 0.0239 ≈ 41,328 in³
- Weight = 0.283 × 41,328 ≈ 11,700 lb (approx.)
Material Densities
| Material | lb/in³ | g/cm³ |
|---|---|---|
| Steel (mild) | 0.283 | 7.85 |
| Aluminum (6061) | 0.0975 | 2.7 |
| Stainless Steel (304) | 0.289 | 8 |
| Copper | 0.321 | 8.89 |
